The Rhodesian Ridgeback is an intelligent dog
with an independent mind.  His ancestors had to
think for themselves in the bush, evaluate a situation
and act accordingly without instructions from the
owner.
Around the house they are easy going, somewhat
lazy dogs content to doze in a sunny spot or in front
of the fire.  Ridgebacks are very much people dogs.
They need to be where their people are.    They are
usually clean dogs, and should be easily house
trained.   They can be aloof with strangers.  But this
should never be confused with nervousness as this
is not acceptable in a Ridgeback..
As much as an adult Ridgeback can be lazy, they can
also be on the go at the drop of a hat.  They need a
secured yard, and benefit greatly from daily walks.
While the Ridgeback appears to be a tough dog, they
are also sensitive.  Rough, harsh treatment will
quickly ruin a Ridgeback.  Fair, consistent training
will get the desired results.
Ridgebacks have a well developed hunting
instinct.  And will chase anything that runs away
from them, including other dogs and people, as many
a startled jogger will confirm.  It's your responsibility
to keep your dog safe and from being a nuisance to
others.
To sum up the Ridgeback character, they are
loyal, brave, sensitive, wise,  and independent.
They do have a sense of humor, and it often helps if
a new Ridgeback owner has a sense of humor as well!
